This novel idea was conceived in the year 1973 and Sonic acquired the name Sonic drive in from Troy Smith and began franchising. The sonic business was run by Smith owing to his rich experience in the restaurant industry. The company is actually based in Oklahama and has locations throughout the United States. The company’ stores were recently renovated to give a more modern look.

The investment to begin a sonic restaurant is $861.3k, a franchise fee of $30k, an ongoing royalty fee of 1 – 5%, 20 years renewable agreement and the renewal fees being $6k for 10 years. The qualifications required would be a net worth of $1M, liquid cash of $500k and general business as well as industry experience. 60% of all franchisees own more than 1 unit and the number of employees required to start a franchisee would be 25. In Sonic, absentee ownership of franchise is not allowed.

Training at headquarters 1 week and regional training at franchisee location for 11 weeks is available. Ongoing support like newsletter, meetings, toll free phone line, internet, safety procedures, field operations, purchasing cooperatives are provided. Marketing is done through national media and regional advertising, co operative advertising and ad slicks. Sonic is a chain of restaurants well established so if you are looking for a good source of income and you will be in a position to make the investment do opt for a franchise with Sonic. You will never regret the choice made.
