In the year 1960, Tom and James Monaghan borrowed $500 to purchase a pizza store in Michigan. Later James gave the business to John for a Volkswagen Beetle. In the year 1965 the company was renamed as Domino’s pizza LLC. The first Domino’s Pizza store was opened in Michigan in the year 1967 and have been franchising since then.

Domino’s products include regular, pan and thin crust pizza as well as bread sticks and Buffalo wings. Domino’s has over 6000 stores in Europe, Asia, Africa and the US. The total investment for starting a Dominoes Pizza store is $141.5k to 415.1k. The franchise fee is $15k. The ongoing royalty fee is 5.5% and the terms of agreement are 10 years renewable. Industry experience is essential and also experience in the retail business is desirable. Generally 60% of franchisees own more than 1 unit. The number of employees needed to run the franchised unit is 15 to 20 and absentee ownership of franchisee is not allowed.

Training at headquarters and regional training for 6 to 8 weeks is available. Ongoing support like newsletter, meetings, toll free phone line, internet, safety procedures, field operations, purchasing cooperatives are provided. Marketing is done through national media and regional advertising, co operative advertising and ad slicks. Domino’s is an established brand in the pizza industry and has set up base even in countries like India where pizzas were a totally unknown commodity. So if you are looking to set up a franchisee do not hesitate to begin with Dominoes as if you are willing to invest, the returns will be substantial.
